The food at your wedding reception can make or break your big day. Get it right and everybody goes away with great memories but if you get it wrong then the overriding memory your guests may have is that the meal wasn't good.
But don't worry, with a little planning and research you can have food that all your guests will enjoy but also won't eat up your wedding budget, as good food doesn't have to be expensive.
The type of food and drink you have will be ultimately decided by the money you have to spend. If you have limited funds and want a lavish reception then invite less guests! |

Decide on your budget and whether you want a sit down meal or a buffet style menu. |
| |
You don't have to know the exact number of guests but a close approximation will make the task easier to cost. Your caterer can give you an estimate to begin with then a final quote when the exact number is known. |

Your reception venue will probably insist on using their in-house caterers. This can be more expensive than getting your own caterer but it will save you alot of time and energy in planning. Ask them to itemise everything that is included i.e. cake cutting and distribution, food for your photographer and entertainers, waiter service, wine on the tables, master of ceremonies, champagne reception and table decorations. |
| |
If you can and want to source your own caterer then ask what is included as they will probably only supply the food and the waiter service. It will be up to you to get your own drinks, glasses, dinnerware, cutlery, decorations, master of ceremonies, table and chairs. |
| |
After you have viewed some sample menus then arrange a tasting as that will be the ultimate test of the quality of the food. |
| |
Ask your caterer if they can provide alternatives for people with different dietary needs e.g. vegetarians, diabetics and nut allergies. |
| |
If you intend having wine on the tables then have a tasting session but don't go too dry or too sweet, opt for a middle ground wine so it will appeal to more people. |
| |
If you want a welcome drink then consider champagne or cocktails for a warm day but for a cold day why not offer mulled wine or hot buttered rum. |
| |
It is very important to get all the quotes and what is included in your catering package in writing. |
